Urgent need for donations for vet care for injured dog
If you frequent the the Grant Park area, you may have seen a homeless man with a dog who collects money at the Boulevard exit next to I-20. Monday morning, his dog was hit by a car and the driver fled (they were on the sidewalk, and the dog was on a leash). Johnny was devastated, and he is such a kind man. My girlfriend and I and several other people stopped and helped get the dog to a nearby vet, and he has a broken pelvis and colon injuries. The sweet dog’s name is Rot Rot (“because he’s spoiled rotten,” said Johnny, his owner), and he is all Johnny has. I begged the vet to work out a payment plan and/or let me volunteer there in exchange for reduced cost care for Rot Rot. He seems open to it, but practically, they also need payment. I set up a ChipIn account for donations, and I’m encouraging people to also call the vet directly and offer payment by phone or in person (Animal Fur 1st, 404.627.7879). So far, we've (my girlfriend and I) raised $1280 of the estimated $1500 it will cost. I'm begging you to contribute ANYTHING you can, and to forward this info to as many people as possible. If you know a wealthy dog and/or human lover, you can give me their info and I will do the begging for you. http://johnnydog.chipin.com/roy-rots-medical-fund (Yeah, the site got autocorrected when I made it!) I talked with the vet, and Rot Rot had surgery Monday night and is "doing well," and Johnny comes to visit him, and Johnny is "so upset, but so grateful." Thank you from the bottom of my heart. |

i just got back from nyc and montreal and el paso. http://www.moby.com/journal/2012-05-29/i-just-got-back-nyc-and-montreal-and-el.html
hi.
i just got back from nyc and montreal and el paso.
unfortunately i wasn't in montreal long enough to take any pictures, but i did have a good 36 hours in el paso to wander around and take pictures of el paso baking in the sun.
during the day saturday it was, i think, around 105 degrees, which isn't all that hot, but hot enough to make el paso look sort of apocalyptic and empty(keeping in mind that i say 'apocalyptic and empty' in good ways, to me 'apocalyptic and empty' are terms of endearment. maybe i should discuss this in therapy. hm). in any case here are some pictures of el paso looking endearingly apocalyptic and empty in the noon sun.
and, for random juxtaposition, is el paso looking a lot less empty(although possibly apocalyptic, but in a different way, and involving lots of people).
and to everyone in montreal and el paso: thank you for a great weekend.

ever since i was a little (or, littler) boy i've always loved the subways in new york. http://www.moby.com/journal/2012-05-24/ever-i-was-little-or-littler-boy-ive.html ever since i was a little (or, littler) boy i've always loved the subways in new york.
when i was really young in the late 60's and early 70's i'd take the train into the city with my grandfather and ride the 6 train downtown to his office. then in the late 70's and early 80's my friends and i would sneak into the city on metro-north and then ride the 6 train down to canal street and then back up to union square to see shows at the palladium (this was in the early 80's when union square was a pretty notorious park for junkies).
then in the mid 80's i had a girlfriend at columbia, so i'd take the grand central shuttle to the 1,9,2, & 3 trains.
then when i moved into the city in the late 80's i commuted to my job on 9th ave on the L train from my apartment on 14th and 3rd, and then when i moved to little italy in the later 80's i learned about the F train in all it's snakey glory.
then in the 90's when i started spending more time in brooklyn i found myself taking the JMZ and the N,R, sometimes even going as far as coney island.
then in the middle of the last decade i briefly moved to the upper west side and took the B,D down to my studio in the lower east side.
which is a long, nostalgic way of saying i've always loved the subways, and they really are the easiest way to get around nyc. every now and then i get stopped by someone on the subway with the question, 'why are you riding the subway?' to which i say, 'because it's fast and i love it.'
so, today i was taking the 6 train from 59th street down to bleeker and i made these quick little subway-phone movies. if you've never ridden the subway in nyc, here's a tiny taste (minus the hordes of people at rush hour). if you haven't ridden the subway in a while then here's a reminder. and if you ride the subway every day please feel free to completely disregard this entire update.
thanks,

here are some pictures of what is arguably one of the most historic and iconic and remarkable houses http://www.moby.com/journal/2012-05-22/here-are-some-pictures-what-arguably-one.html i'm in new york and montreal and el paso this week, so unfortunately this will be my last architectural update until next monday.
but in the meantime here are some pictures of what is arguably one of the most historic and iconic and remarkable houses in l.a, the schindler house.
it's been photographed about a million times, and deservedly so, for it's a beautiful and idiosyncratic and strangely bucolic (although a lot of that is, of course, the setting) house.

it also has a really idealistic and idiosyncratic history, here's the wikipedia page if you're interested:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schindler_House
and apparently when it was first built you could sit up in the sleeping baskets and see all the way to downtown (now that's impossible due to the 4 billion buildings that have been built in the last 90 years in l.a between the schindler house and downtown).
also a nice l.a architecture fact: at one point schindler and neutra co-habitated in the house.
i'll take some other pictures this week, and if they're worth looking at i'll put them up here.
and then next week i'll get back to taking pictures of oddball buildings in l.a.
thanks
